Environmental Science Track

The Environmental Science Track is offered through the College of Mines & Earth Sciences.

Industry’s emerging environmental challenges are increasingly interdisciplinary in nature and require professionals who have a strong foundation in science, are able to think across boundaries, and effectively communicate with all stakeholders.

The Environmental Science Track focuses on the analytical aspects of six focus areas that are at the forefront of today’s environmental fields. These focus areas include:

  • Public and Environmental Health
  • Hydrology
  • Environmental Chemistry
  • Remote Sensing and GIS
  • Communication and Policy
  • Sustainability

Environment Science Track graduates of the PMST program are well positioned to make immediate contributions to critical current and emerging local, regional and international environmental challenges faced by industry, governments, and the individuals whose lives are impacted by global environmental change.

The Environmental Science Track, which maintains a close relationship with the University of Utah’s Office of Sustainability, is able to provide students with diverse and growing opportunities to complement classroom experiences.

Please refer to the PMST Academic Programs site for a complete discussion of the requirements for graduation. Note that in addition to courses in Transferable Skills (9 credits), Advanced Quantitative Skills (9 credits), and an Internship (3 credits), students should choose 3 courses (9 credits) from one of the following six focus areas. The remaining 6 credits may be taken in any different focus area. At least 3 credits must be taken from the Communication and Policy group.  Science track-specific courses taken by students must, in sum, adhere to the National PSM requirements for science content of a PSM degree.  Please contact the Environmental Science Track Director with any questions regarding this requirement.
